Gene Huang, Ph.D.

Chief Economist

Gene Huang is Chief Economist for FedEx and a Managing Director of the company’s Economic and Industry Analysis Group. He and his team track and monitor all industries and countries FedEx serves.  

Gene plays an active role in the business economic and policy circles and serves in an advisory capacity to U.S. government agencies and international organizations. As a member of the Blue Chip Consensus Panel, he contributes to the economic consensus used by policy makers as well as the business community. He is part of The Wall Street Journal Economic Panel and BusinessWeek Magazine’s Business Outlook Panel. Gene serves as vice chairman for the Conference of Business Economists and sat on the Board of Directors (2004-2007) of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE).  Additionally, he serves as a member of the most selective groups of business economists including the European Council of Economists, National Business Economic Issues Council, and the Harvard Industrial Economists Group.

Viewed as one of the foremost economic forecasters, Gene was profiled in BusinessWeek as its “Most Accurate Forecaster” in 2002. In 2006, The Wall Street Journal ranked Gene as second among the nation’s top forecasters. Gene credits his forecasting success to the “front row seat” that FedEx provides him in Global Supply Chain Management. 

Starting his corporate career in 1987 with a Wall Street money management firm, Gene has worked for some of the world’s largest industrial corporations and prestigious research institutions, including Eaton Corporation, General Motors Corporation, ICSEAD in Japan, and Wharton School’s Economic Research Unit.   

Gene received his M.A. from Yale University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a law degree from Fudan University in Shanghai. 

Gene is the author of two books on business economics and many articles published in the U.S., Japanese, and European economic and policy journals. He is frequently requested by news outlets worldwide for his economic commentary.
