BRUSSELS, March 25, 2013—FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company, has safely delivered two giant pandas from China to Toronto Zoo following months of preparations and public anticipation. FedEx Express has in the past also delivered giant pandas to European zoos, including the UK and France.
The giant pandas, breeding pair Er Shun (female) and Da Mao (male), made the journey from Chengdu, China, to the FedEx Express Canadian Hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport, aboard a specially branded MD-11 aircraft, donated by FedEx, which touched down on schedule at 10:30am EDT.
Following the arrival of FedEx Panda Express, Er Shun and Da Mao were transported by two FedEx Express trucks to Toronto Zoo, where they will begin a five-year stay before transferring to Calgary. The specially-branded FedEx Express trucks will continue to service the giant pandas nutritional needs during their stay in Toronto, with deliveries of 600 to 900 kilograms of fresh bamboo supplies two-to-three times a week.
In 2012, FedEx Express safely transported two giant pandas on a non-stop flight from Chengdu, China, to Paris, France, in a specially chartered Boeing 777F, called the “FedEx Panda Express”. The two three-year-old pandas, Huan Huan and Yuan Zi, then continued their journey in FedEx Express vehicles to deliver them to their new home: the Chinese area of the specially-built giant panda enclosure at ZooParc de Beauval. Their arrival marked the first time in 10 years that giant pandas would reside in France.
Previously, in 2011, FedEx Express transported two giant pandas, Tian Tian, an eight year-old female panda, and Yang Guang, an eight year-old male panda from Chengdu’s Bifengxia Panda Base in China to Edinburgh Airport in Scotland. The pandas also travelled in the “FedEx Panda Express”. Their arrival in Scotland marked the first time in more than 17 years that giant pandas would reside in the UK.
FedEx Express has a long history of transporting rare and delicate cargo, including a windmill from Denmark, the Ryder Cup and a vintage Jaguar Le Mans car worth more than £1 million.
